Europe’s largest forecasts flat business in 2012 as debt crisis dampens demand The Port of Rotterdam boosted container traffic 6 percent in 2011 but Europe’s largest port forecast the eurozone sovereign debt crisis will restrain growth next year before shipping demand recovers in 2012. The box volume growth to 11.9 million 20 foot equivalent units marked a slowdown from the 11 percent increase the Dutch port reported in 2010, when container traffic reached 11.1 million TEUs. Rotterdam boosted overall cargo volume 0.8 percent to a record 433 million metric tons as Europe’s economic woes restrained business in the second half of the year.

Import from China-advantages and disadvantages

Importing from China and the Far East can be a very lucrative business, as long as you do your research and a reputation for import / export agent. Import “blind” over the Internet may request a trouble free, especially if the prepayment. They also look for pirated e-mail accounts, with free e-mail. Payment by credit card is the default when you import from China and therefore demanded cash up front (unless it is in the number of samples) automatically activates an alarm. A letter of credit is not perfect, for example, an exporter would fill boxes with paper and could not see that goods are not there until the bank has complied with the letter of credit.

Good nine months for Port of Rotterdam

Throughput rises between January and September, boosted by a positive third quarter of the year In the Netherlands, the Port of Rotterdam Authority has announced that cargo throughput increased by 1.7 per cent through the first nine months of the year, growing to 327m tonnes. EU to invest 32 billion Euros to improve European transport

The European Commission has adopted a proposal to transform the existing patchwork of European roads, railways, airports and canals into a unified transport network (TEN-T). The new core network will remove bottlenecks, upgrade infrastructure and streamline cross border transport operations for passengers and businesses throughout the EU. It will improve connections between different modes of transport and contribute to the EU’s climate change objectives. European Commission Vice-President Siim Kallas, responsible for transport, said: “Transport is fundamental to an efficient EU economy, but vital connections are currently missing. Europe’s railways have to use 7 different gauge sizes and only 20 of our major airports and 35 of our major ports are directly connected to the rail network. Without good connections Europe will not grow or prosper.”

Port of Rotterdam in Russia

As from today October 19, representatives of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, several other Dutch companies, the Rotterdam Municipality and the Dutch government, will visit Russia. The trade mission is led by the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte. According to the Port of Rotterdam Authority told SeaNews, Russia’s share within Rotterdam’s total throughput in 2010 was 14% or 59.8 million tonnes. (1). Russia is, in volume, Rotterdam’s 2nd important partner (2). The Netherlands (Rotterdam), ranks 2nd, after Germany, as an EU destination for Russian exports. Its share was 13% or 14.3 billion euro in 2009. (3). The main three products are crude oil, oil products, both mainly via the port of Primorsk and containers, mainly via St. Petersburg.

Connecting Europe: The new EU core transport network

The Commission has adopted, on October 19th, a proposal to transform the existing patchwork of European roads, railways, airports and canals into a unified transport network (TEN-T). The new core network will remove bottlenecks, upgrade infrastructure and streamline cross border transport operations for passengers and businesses throughout the EU. It will improve connections between different modes of transport and contribute to the EU’s climate change objectives. The normal co-financing rates for TEN-T projects on the core network will be up to 50% EU co-financing for studies, for works up to 20% (for example exploratory works for a major tunnel, there are certain possibilities to increase co-financing for cross-border projects for rail and inland waterway connections (up to 40%) and for certain ITS projects, like ERTMS, higher co-financing of up to 50% can be made available to support Member States making the transition.

The trans-European transport network (Ten-T) is a program of development of the European Union transport infrastructure by Parliament and the European Council. He has ambitions to facilitate the development of trade, in particular by the different constituent networks complete interoperability, and allow the creation of a genuine single market, to increase the modal share of more environmentally friendly transportation modes, and to accelerate the integration of new Member countries.

For nearly 30 years, personal computers as we have known them have been the drivers of the technology engine. From Intel to Microsoft to Dell to HP to Micron Technology — many fortunes were made on the back of the PC. But the rise of mobile computing is upending the technology business and is simultaneously redefining what is a personal computer and how we use it. On Thursday Hewlett-Packard, one of the oldest companies in Silicon Valley with deep connections to the PC ecosystem (they paid $25 billion for Compaq in 2002) and the world’s largest seller of PCs, confirmed it is looking to sell off its personal computing business. It’s also getting out of the hardware game altogether, ditching its tablet and smartphone operations too. But if HP does eventually find a buyer for its PC division, it will only be catching up with IBM, which in 2004 decided that the low-margin PC business wasn’t worth pursuing.

Overall cargo tonnage increased 1 percent year-over-year in first half Cargo through Port of Rotterdam in the first half of the year increased 1 percent year-over-year to 215 million metric tons, as a 9.7 increase in container handling helped offset a decline in oil products shipments. Throughput of 20-foot container equivalent units at Europe’s largest port rose to 6 million within the same period, while bulk cargo shipment fell 4 percent to 140 million metric tons, the Port of Rotterdam Authority said.

58% Unfamiliar With QR Codes

Online consumer market research company Lab42 wanted to find out if people were scanning QR Codes and if so what it takes to make them scan them. 500 Americans over the age of 18 were surveyed to discover where people saw QR Codes, how they were using them and why they were scanning them (infographic below). Lab42 say that the online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Viber, which lets iPhone users call and send messages to contacts over 3G and WiFi, free of charge, has been teasing its Android app for a while now. Last May, the VoIP startup finally released an Android app in beta, but only to a limited subset of some 50,000 users. Today, they’re officially launching the application for all. European Road Freight Rates decline despite increased fuel costs
